Because we’ve been using X for our Audience build we’re going to look at how to drive newsletter subscribers using X.
Now, you could simply say “please subscribe to my newsletter”.
This will work initially. Your most loyal Audience members are already primed to want to hear more from you and all they need is a nudge that you have a newsletter.
When you launch make sure to use this to get your first subscribers.
However, this well will soon be tapped dry. We need a more sustainable method to get people from X to your newsletter.
We’re going to focus on a tried and tested method called a DM giveaway.
I’m going to show you two layers- a soft approach and a hard approach.
First the soft approach.
The basics are:
you create something of value.
you talk about it on social media
for someone to get it they need to follow you, like your post and comment that they want it
you DM (direct message) the thing to them
That’s sort of it.
It works on all social media platforms but best on Twitter. Especially when combined with tools like Tweethunter or Hypefury that do the DM’ing for you automatically. Sign up to Tweethunter here (affiliate link). *Sign up to Hypefury - what I currently use (affiliate link).
It’s easier with an example. Here’s one I made earlier:
This post tells people about something of value : a new Prompt Playbook.
It gives them instructions to follow, like the post and comment “Blog” on the post.
As soon as they do that they get sent this follow up:
What' we’ve done is:
Gain a new follower
Gained like + comment engagement on the original tweet (which in turn means it will be seen more)
Plugged your newsletter in the DM so people can then subscribe
Delivered something valuable to your new audience member so they become a huge fan.
That’s the play. Capiche?
The hard sale version of this is more aggressive.
Instead of just requiring someone to interact with a post to get the direct link to the lead magnet we instead make signing up to the newsletter part of the process.
This time the basics are:
you create something of value.
you talk about it on social media
for someone to get it they need to provide an email address and get subscribed to the newsletter
once they provide the email address they are sent the lead magnet
I’ll cover how to set up both the soft and the hard versions of this strategy.
