First up we want to pull together a big list of what we love doing.
Start this with pen and paper (old fashioned I know!) as it’s a better way to allow the ideas to flow freely.
This can be both your actual hobbies but also the parts of your work or life that you enjoy. For example maybe you love organising your home. This isn’t a “hobby” per se but it can still be something that brings you great joy.
The same happens at work - there may be parts of your work that you particularly enjoy. For example maybe you like public speaking or planning the office Christmas party. Perhaps neither of these are your actual job but they are something you revel in.
Once you have a decent list go ahead and use this prompt to expand your list:
I'm trying to identify activites that I love doing.
I am struggling to list them all out and need a list that I can choose from.
Based on these example activities please suggest other activities to help me brainstorm.
I love: [my list of activities]
Where is says [my list of activities] go ahead and put all the activities you have brainstormed. The more you add the better the results will be.
Here’s an example of the output:
This prompt will take our original brainstorm and start giving us additional ideas. The purpose is purely to jog our memory.
Go ahead and copy/paste the relevant ideas into a list. We’ll use it shortly.
Is this the same as “follow your passion”? Absolutely not. Following your passion is terrible advice because often our passions do not lead to sustainable businesses.
Instead find activities that we enjoy enough to sustainably do them. This is sufficient.
We just need activities that we don’t actively hate or dislike. If we do we’ll not want to work on our business and the business will fail.
