Chapter 1

Exploring your interests and skills

Thank you as always for voting! It really helps guide my writing so that it’s valuable for you, which is all that matters.

Otherwise I’d get super distracted and go deep on something that is only interesting to me and, maybe, 3 other people.

The vote this week was between working on the entrepreneurial mindset or honing in on our business niche.

Business niche beat mindset to the post 60% to 40%. Pretty close!

This week therefore we’ll be covering the following topics:

Part 1: Exploring Your Interests and Skills

Part 2: Getting Clear on Your Motivations

Part 3: Finding Your Niche

Part 4: Validating and Refining Your Idea

Part 5: Planning Next Steps

Waitlist time!

You know the drill. I’m launching a course and community two week’s time.

Grab your spot here ==> https://forms.gle/1sJdjCnHhnqucjJc8

People on the waitlist will get a very special offer - I’ll be able to give more details next week. I’m still debating it because it’s maybe too good… šŸ˜…

Let’s get started:

Exploring your interests and skills

1. Uncovering our skills

First up we’re going to work to uncover your skills.

For some people this is easy. You know what you’re good at!

For others it’s an excruciating process.

If you lack self-confidence, or are just super modest, you might think you aren’t really very good at anything.

Generally this isn’t true. You will have skills but not the confidence to declare them.

Alternatively you might be so good at some things that you no longer think of yourself as good at that thing.

For example just yesterday I fixed my mum’s printer. I don’t consider myself ā€œgood atā€ printers and certainly wouldn’t list it as a skill but I got the issue solved in a few minutes.

Objectively it is a skill that I have, even if not explicitly recognised as such. You’ll have lots of similarly unrecognised skills.

We’re going to use a coaching prompt to elicit our skills from us. Here’s the prompt:

Act as a coach

I often find it hard to know what I'm good at - please coach me to help me curate a list of my skills.

Ask me questions about life, work and my hobbies until you have extracted my skills.

Use this in a new chat and ChatGPT will begin a coaching process, much as if you were sitting with a human coach.

šŸ’¬ Prompt Output:

ChatGPT will first ask a broad set of questions:

Choose an area to explore. Don’t worry about doing them all in one go. For example I can respond ā€œWork experience current job : digital marketing, teachingā€.

ChatGPT will follow up:

For each area ChatGPT will ask supplemental questions. Answer as much as possible here, using the numbers ChatGPT gave you for simplicity.

Here I respond ā€œDigital Marketing 1 SEO, cold emailingā€ for the example. I get this response:

Amazing - these are the actual skills involved and I have them all. I just would have struggled to write these out if you point-blank asked me ā€œwhat are you skills?ā€

I tell ChatGPT ā€œsave these and return to the top levelā€.

That’ll cause ChatGPT to record these are skills that I have and then it’ll go back to the beginning for me to explore other areas.

Alternatively copy/paste these skills and just restart the process with the same prompt in a new chat.

Continue this process to collect up all your skills from all different facets of your life, work and hobbies.

Warning - this is a long process if you do it properly. But the end result will be a powerful inventory of your skills. We’ll be using this in later steps.

2. Uncovering our strengths

We’re going to run another coaching prompt - this time on our strengths.

What’s the difference?

Strengths are your natural talents or abilities. They are activities you feel intrinsically motivated to do, find energising, and can do well without much formal training. Strengths are often innate and tend to come more naturally.

Skills are learned abilities and competencies, often through study, training or practice over time. Skills may build on natural strengths, but are developed through effort and repetition. You may have skills that aren't your strengths, and strengths you haven't yet developed into skills.

There’s a very powerful assessment called the Gallup StrengthsFinder. It’s a 30-40 minute self administered test that finds which of 34 strengths you are particularly strong at.

It’s worth doing if you have the funds - it’s around $60 for one assessment.

However, for the purposes of our current process we can get the basics via ChatGPT:

Perform a strength finder assessment with 30 multiple choice questions

Ask each of the questions, wait for the response and then ask the next question.

Ask multiple question related to each strength to increase the validity of the test. Do not tell me what strength each question relates to so as to not alter my answers.

Get my answer as the answer number

then provide a list of my strengths ranked from top to bottom.

šŸ’¬ Prompt Output:

This prompt will trigger an assessment process, asking one question at a time:

Simply plug in the number from 1 to 5 that resonates with you.

Continue through all the questions until you reach your final result:

Want this to be even more detailed? Adjust the number of questions asked in the prompt. Doing so allows ChatGPT to assess more strengths. At 30 questions it assesses 5 strengths. At 100 questions it assesses 10 strengths.

Once done keep a note of your strengths along with your list of skills.

3. Finding your flow

One more coaching assessment. We want to find activities that you find enjoyable.

We don’t want to end up with a list like ā€œwatching Netflixā€ and ā€œPlaystationā€. These are totally reasonable activities for downtime but not generally for a business.

Instead we want to find value creating activities that put you into the state of flow. These aren’t necessarily purely ā€œfunā€ but instead can be better described as engaging.

Have you ever been so absorbed in an activity that you lost track of time. You started a task and raised your head several hours later to find that it’s dark in the room as the sun’s gone down. You were so focused that you didn’t process information about the outside world.

That’s flow.

If you can find work that puts you in this state you’ll have a great time building your business.

Let’s find what puts you in flow with another coaching prompt.

Act as a coach helping me find fulfilling work.

Specifically, ask me questions to find which tasks put me into a state of flow.

Focus me on valuable creative tasks.

Ask each question one at a time, wait for my response and then move to the next question

Use this to uncover 5 separate tasks that put me into flow

Then extrapolate the commonalities between these tasks to suggest what type of tasks are most likely to put me in flow

Use this to suggest further tasks that may be engaging.

šŸ’¬ Prompt Output:

This prompt will begin questioning you about engaging tasks in the past.

It’ll quickly identify tasks that previously put you in flow. That’s a great start. But it’ll also look for commonalities between the tasks like so:

This list nails me. It’s ignored other common flow states like collaborating with others and instead focused in on my big drivers - creativity, challenge, problem-solving.

Keep note of your list of commonalities. These are the type of activities that will likely put you into flow and thus be perfect for when you come to build a business.

4. Premium Prompt - Coaching Prompts

Free Trial - Premium

We’re providing a free trial of the Premium Prompts. Premium Prompts will be available for members only once our community launches. Stay tuned.

We’ve just used 3 coaching prompts in this Part.

Hopefully you can see the power of coaching prompts and how a well constructed one can help you clarify your thinking and extract valuable information from you.

Lots of people forget you can use ChatGPT for this. As such I want to give a quick how-to on getting ChatGPT to coach you on anything.

Here is a generic coaching prompt template you can adapt:

Act as a [type] coach

Help me work out [your problem statement]

Ask each question one at a time, wait for my response and then move to the next question

Summarise your conclusions and ask if sufficient or whether further changes are needed

Summarise action points.

For example I can plug in ā€œproductivity coachā€ and ā€œhelp me work out how to stop looking at my phone so muchā€

ChatGPT walked me through 7 questions to collect the information it needed and then returned this action plan:

You can adapt this basic coaching prompt to any problems you are having.

Pulling it together

We’ve covered some important foundational work with these coaching prompts. It’s a lot of work to go through these properly.

But at the end of the process you’ll have a strong inventory of skills, strengths and engaging activities that we can start to use to nail your niche.

And hopefully you are now feeling pretty empowered now that you can see all your skills and strengths written down. Look at you, you little superhero!

A reminder of what we’re covering this week :

Part 1: Exploring Your Interests and Skills

Part 2: Getting Clear on Your Motivations

Part 3: Finding Your Niche

Part 4: Validating and Refining Your Idea

Part 5: Planning Next Steps

Chapter 2

1. Work out your why

In this Part we’re going to work out exactly why you want a business.

We’ll use this to map to what sort of business you should create. Not all businesses are built the same and not all will be what you actually want to build.

Waitlist time!

You know the drill. I’m launching a course and community two week’s time.

Grab your spot here ==> https://forms.gle/1sJdjCnHhnqucjJc8

People on the waitlist will get a very special offer - I’ll be able to give more details next week. I’m still debating it because it’s maybe too good… šŸ˜…

Let’s get started:

Getting Clear on your Motivations

1. Work out your why

First up we’re going to work out our Why.

Lots of people want to start a business but they never really stop to think why exactly.

Or if they have it’ll be vague things like ā€œI want more moneyā€ or ā€œI hate my jobā€.

Both good reasons but let’s gain some more clarity using this prompt:

Act as a business coach

Run an assessment to work out the reason why I want to start a business.

Reasons include but are not limited to - Own boss, Pursue passion, Financial independence, Flexible schedule, Leave legacy, New challenge, Innovate, Capitalize on idea, Fill need, Express creativity, Gain respect, Financial security, Dissatisfaction, Create jobs, Work/life balance

Ask a series of 10 questions moving from negative (push) reasons to positive (pull reasons), honing in on the top three reasons

Ask the questions one at a time, wait for my response and then ask the next question. Draw on previous answers to shape new questions. Do not explicitly mention the framework being used

Now simply answer the questions that ChatGPT asks. The more detail the better so take your time and don’t rush the answers.

Each answer will adjust the next questions meaning that this prompt is reactive.

If you find that your answers take ChatGPT off in the wrong direction either say so so that it can reset or go ahead and start a new chat with the prompt.

šŸ’¬ Prompt Output:

After running through the process ChatGPT will give you your top three reasons for wanting to start a business. These may surprise you.

Often it’s not just cash that drives us but instead more control of time, being able to build a legacy or something else more fundamental.

Don’t worry though - you can make cash at the same time. In fact you need to in order to be able to support your primary goals.

2. Income requirements

Next is an extremely powerful prompt that will help you work out how much income you actually need to live your ideal lifestyle.

Go ahead and use the prompt for now and I’ll explain more about how it works in the output.

Here’s the prompt:

Act as an entrepreneurial coach who is helping a first time business founder to work out how much they need to earn in order to live the lifestyle they want

Walk through this process with me one at a time. Ask the questions for each step, await my answers and then move to the next step:
-Define your ideal lifestyle. What does quality of life look like for you? Consider aspects like hobbies, travel, housing, possessions, experiences, family time, how many children, etc. Guide me through this process to gather information on what the ideal lifestyle looks like.
-Research cost of living. Ask me where I want to live. Look up average prices for housing, food, utilities, transportation in your desired city or town. Factor in costs of your lifestyle. List annual costs. Make a detailed list of estimated costs for your lifestyle. Include necessities and discretionary spending. Generate an estimated cost of living.
-Identify goal costs. Determine one-time and ongoing costs for major goals like buying a home, starting a business, having kids, dream vacations.
-Calculate annual amount needed. Add up all annual costs and goal amounts needed. This is your baseline yearly income requirement.
-Factor in taxes. Use the amount required and the location's tax bracket to provide a tax estimate. Adjust the annual total by subtracting estimated taxes to get your pre-tax income target.
-Add savings buffer. Ask me to decide on a savings percentage (e.g. 10-20% of income) and add this to get total needed pre-tax income.
-Provide a final result of how much is needed per year in a tabular format with the costs that make up this required total.

šŸ’¬ Prompt Output:

This is a long output but worth including in full so you can see how powerful it is.

For this example I used:

ā€œlondon townhouse, Ā£1m one car, a tesla S travel 6 momths a year, international but relatively budget (airbnb) dining out once a week, theatre once a month 2 children, non-private schoolā€

as my lifestyle inputs.

ChatGPT will take that basic information and run through the whole process of working out your required annual income for you.

The more detail you give it the more it’ll be able to accurately gauge required income.

Based on the inputs I gave and the fact that I live in London (one of the most expensive cities on earth, fml) ChatGPT comes out with a pre-tax income of £200,000 ($244k).

Obviously this is not a replacement for working with a professional financial planner but it’s amazing at getting you into the right ballpark.

Most people when starting a business never go through this exercise. They aim instead for wild numbers like ā€œmake a $1bn company and sell itā€ or ā€œearn $10m a yearā€.

If your desired lifestyle requires this sort of income - perfect! The calculator will generate this for you and give you an accurate figure.

For the majority of people though once you plug in your actual requirements you’ll generally find that the actual amount needed from a business is lower than you expected.

For instance if I plug in a Ferrari Portofino and a 5 bed house in the Hollywood Hills in my inputs on top of all the London based inputs I added in before I come to this figure:

$763,636 per annum required to maintain my London - LA lifestyle.

Obviously this is a lot of money. But it’s not $10 million a year levels.

It’s also a real figure. A goal we can aim at. Rather than some random figure that internet gurus have got your excited about.

Go through this exercise and generate your total needed (pre-tax). We’ll be using it shortly.

3. Premium Prompt - Guidelines with Teeth

Free Trial - Premium

We’re providing a free trial of the Premium Prompts. Premium Prompts will be available for members only once our community launches. Stay tuned.

In the first prompt we worked out your why.

Let’s use this prompt to expand these wider goals into a proper brief.

The idea here is to move from generalisations to actual guidelines with teeth.

Here’s the prompt:

Act as a business coach.

I have identified 3 reasons for wanting to start a business.

Combine these three reasons into a short brief that explains how I can use a business to achieve these 3 goals.

Focus on what I should aim at and just as important what I need to avoid.

šŸ’¬ Prompt Output:

This turns some generic ā€œnice to havesā€ into actual rules for the business. I’ve included things to avoid for this reason - limiting what our business does is one of the best ways to shape its trajectory.

Pulling it together

Now we’ve done all the preparation work. Over the last two Parts we’ve run through lots of coaching prompts to extract information about the best business for you to start.

In the next Part we’re going to pull this together and start coming up with business ideas and niches.

All this preparatory work will make the next step all the more powerful.

A reminder of what we’re covering this week :

Part 1: Exploring Your Interests and Skills

Part 2: Getting Clear on Your Motivations

Part 3: Finding Your Niche

Part 4: Validating and Refining Your Idea

Part 5: Planning Next Steps

Chapter 3

1. Business idea generator

You’ve done a lot of hard soul searching over the last two Parts.

Today you get to relax and let ChatGPT do some of the hard work!

We’re going to pull in the work you’ve done so far and have ChatGPT crunch all the data to start generating business ideas.

Waitlist time!

Just over a week until the course and exclusive community launches.

It’s now been decided that there will be a very special waitlist price.

Basically moving forward the the community will be charged quarterly (every 3 months).

But not for people on the waitlist. No subscription.

Let’s get started:

Getting Clear on your Motivations

1. Business idea generator

First up we’re going to draw on all our previous work in this mega-prompt.

If you’ve done all of the previous work in the same chat you should be able to copy/paste this directly in.

Otherwise replace the [elements] with your information from past prompts.

Here’s the prompt :

Act as an entrepreneurial advisor

Provide 10 distinct business ideas based on the provided information.

My skills: [skills]
My strengths:[strengths]
Tasks that engage me: [flow tasks]
My reasons for starting a business: [reasons]
My required income level per annum: [required income before tax]

Provide in a table:
Business idea , description, main revenue drivers, income breakdown, fit with skills/strengths/engagement, fit with reasons for starting a business.

šŸ’¬ Prompt Output:

Here are the first 5 business ideas:

Copy/paste the details of ideas that appeal to you into a document.

Re-run the prompt if you need more ideas. Keep going until you have 5-10 ideas that you are excited about.

They don’t need to be your absolute passion. Instead just find ones that you think you’d enjoy setting up and running. Once up and running there will be more flexibility towards passion - first we need stability.

We’re now going to go into depth with these exciting ideas in the next step.

2. Business report

We want to delve into detail with each of the business ideas we have so we can better assess it. The first pass was very high level - now we’re looking into each idea more.

Use this prompt on each idea, one at a time, to generate a more in-depth report.

Act as a business startup advisor

[paste business idea]

Review this business idea and give me:

-team required
-capital required
-assets required

A detailed list for each with estimated costings

As well as :
-time to revenue
-competition level
-market demand

Design everything so that it generates the required income of [required income] for the founder. Keep everything as lean as required to hit this prime objective.

šŸ’¬ Prompt Output:

Here’s an example for the ed-tech platform:

ChatGPT will generate a complete business breakdown of what you’ll need to get in place to make this business work.

Generate these breakdowns for each of the businesses that excite you until you have 3-5 left.

In the next Part we’re going to analyse those 3-5 and gauge market demand so we know it’s a business idea worth progressing with.

3. Premium Prompt - Bootstrapping

Free Trial - Premium

We’re providing a free trial of the Premium Prompts. Premium Prompts will be available for members only once our community launches. Stay tuned.

The business breakdown created by ChatGPT above is a reasonable plan. It gives you all the required team, assets and capital required.

This is how most ā€œnormalā€ businesses start.

You start by pulling everything together upfront and then plan to generate revenue months or years down the line.

This may or may not be on the table for you personally. And it’ll depend on your particular niche and whether there’s any investment cash available.

If not then here’s an additional prompt to take an existing business breakdown and winnow it down to solopreneur essentials:

Act as a solopreneur expert

Take this business breakdown and adapt it for:

Team of one, with no-code tools and freelance contractors
No significant starting capital

Assume bootstrapping, reinvestment of revenue into growth.

Retain focus on founder's income target as primary concern.

šŸ’¬ Prompt Output:

This strips out the main cost centres (team and capital) of the business and replaces with methods to allow you to bootstrap growth.

If you are having trouble with all your ideas seeming to cost too much to implement then try this prompt and see if they become more palatable.

Again, go with the most exciting ideas for now. In the next Part we’ll start to test whether there is a market.

Pulling it together

In this Part we pulled in all our hard preparatory work into a handful of powerful mega prompts.

These crunched the data and gave us starter business ideas. We’ve chosen a few that excite us for now.

Next we’ll begin to see which are the most realistic to build based on market demand and conditions.

A reminder of what we’re covering this week :

Part 1: Exploring Your Interests and Skills

Part 2: Getting Clear on Your Motivations

Part 3: Finding Your Niche

Part 4: Validating and Refining Your Idea

Chapter 4

Validation and Refining your Ideas

You now have a handful of exciting business ideas.

Now we’re going to kill your darlings!

Ideas are easy - we are starting to assess how well the ideas will stand up in the real world.

This will be a brutal process. But extremely important.

Some details about the course/community launch

6 modules, community of experts, live Q&A sessions, cohort sprints, phone app for easy access.

All with the goal of getting your first online business started. Using AI to make the process cheaper and easier.

Waitlist is open until this weekend only. Then all waitlist bonuses/offers are gone.

Grab your spot here ==> https://forms.gle/1sJdjCnHhnqucjJc8

Let’s get started:

Validation and Refining your Ideas

1. Niche Analyser

You should now have a handful of ideas from the last Part.

Remember - ideas are cheap! You’ll have a lot. Even more now we can use ChatGPT to help us ideate.

We want to be ruthless and cut down our vague ideas into actual actionable plans. And then action!

We’re going to start this process with a prompt that will score our ideas.

Here’s the prompt:

Act as a business analyst

Provide a rating of each of these business ideas

Assess them on revenue potential, competitiveness, skill requirements, capital requirements, economic moat potential.

Based on this being a one person/small team business rather than VC funded.

Give an analysis of each point as well as a numeric score.
Then for each business idea generate a composite final score for its attractiveness.

Business idea 1 =

Business idea 2 =

Business idea 3 =

I ran the prompt with

  1. AI-Powered Sustainable Learning Platforms

  2. AI-Driven Sustainable Urban Farming Kits

  3. Virtual AI Sustainable Living Coaches

Each idea had a full description attached. Give as much detail as possible from the last Part for ChatGPT to best analyse the potential.

šŸ’¬ Prompt Output:

This is the output for just one of the ideas. ChatGPT generates an overall score - 6.4 out of 10 in this case.

Notice that the prompt is also skewed towards solopreneur/small team businesses. If you have access to funding remove this part of the prompt.

2. Test with your Audience

If you have an audience already then you should take your new business idea to them.

X/Twitter polls are a great way to quickly test receptiveness to an idea.

If you don’t have an audience yet then:

  • I recommend getting started building one ASAP as it makes launching any business much simpler. I talk at length about the process elsewhere.

  • You can simply use ads to get the reach you need on your polls. Post a poll and put $5 behind it on X and you’ll get the votes you need.

  • Leverage my audience -more in the Premium Prompt.

Here’s a quick prompt to generate polls. Use it below the business idea prompt above or copy/paste in your business details alongside the prompt:

Give me 5 Twitter poll ideas I can use to test market demand for this ideas

šŸ’¬ Prompt Output:

Use these polls (and others) to start to gauge a baseline interest. You can also use polls to begin adapting your offer for what the market seems to be more interested in. Listen to your future customers!

3. Build an MVP

People’s words are one thing.

But the real (and only!) proof of whether a business idea will work is if people open their wallets.

Back when I lived in New York I won a Lean Startup Machine competition. It was a 3 day hackathon where we had to plan, build and sell a product.

We won not because our idea was the best. But because we went out into Times Square and sold the damn thing.

We made a handful of sales of a non-existent product - gathering their contact details and promising to send them it if/when it was ready.

We only made $7 but that was infinitely higher than the $0 all the other teams made.

Our grubby $7 showed actual genuine interest in the product - not just a vague ā€œyeah sounds coolā€.

You should build a basic version of your product and see if people will hand over cash for it.

I’m not talking about a fully fleshed out product. That’s a waste of time, especially if there isn’t a market for it.

Instead we build an MVP (minimum viable product). This is the most stripped down but still recognisable form of the product or service.

We then give it away in exchange for an email or ideally charge a small amount of cash. Even a single dollar.

Here’s a prompt to generate MVP ideas. Use this below the idea that you are working on:

Provide me with 3 detailed MVP versions of this idea that can be made in a day

šŸ’¬ Prompt Output:

ChatGPT generates a super basic version of the product/service that you are working on.

It retains the core value of the offer but in its most simplistic form. If people find this valuable then they are more likely to find your developed full offer valuable too.

Once you’ve settled on an idea go ahead and put together a super simple MVP. It should not take you more than a day. If it does it’s too complex.

If you get a good response to the MVP push onto the next phase that we’ll be covering in the final Part.

If the response is lukewarm or non-existent then roll back to idea generation and go again.

Seems time consuming? Sure. But not as much as if you spend months or even years building something that nobody wants! Better to spend the time building prototypes now than go all in on a losing idea.

4. Premium Prompt - Use my Audience

Free Trial - Premium

We’re providing a free trial of the Premium Prompts. Premium Prompts will be available for members only once our community launches. Stay tuned.

Bit of a different one today - it’s an opportunity rather than an additional prompt.

Share your business idea or MVP with me on X (@iamkylebalmer) and I’ll make sure it’s seen - on X, LinkedIn and in the community.

Just post the details and tag me and I’ll see it.

I’ll then re-post, specifically asking for feedback from others. If you don’t yet have an audience you can leverage mine.

Pulling it together

A small number of steps in this Part because building and launching an MVP is a big task.

Lots of you will be tempted to skip it. Don’t.

It’s the single most valuable part of this process and will save your countless months of pain in the future.

In the next Part we’ll look at building out the next steps and getting cracking on the full business.

A reminder of what we’re covering this week :

Let’s get started:

Planning Next Steps

1. BATON

Building a business is a complex task. There are lots of moving parts and it’s easy to become overwhelmed by it all.

For this reason I constructed the BATON framework.

It’s a useful tool for providing structure to an otherwise impossibly complex task.

BATON stands for:

  • Business

  • Audience

  • Tribe

  • Offer

  • Network

Any venture can be broken down into:

  • Business – creating a product or service people want or need

  • Audience – attracting attention to your product or service

  • Tribe – establishing demand for your product or service with a smaller subset of the audience

  • Offer – selling your product or service to your tribe

  • Network – scaling the business to increase revenue

Over the last few Parts you’ve covered the basics of Business, the first component of BATON.

The next steps are to build an Audience, build trust and demand by focusing on a smaller Tribe, make sales of your Offer and then scale via Network effects.

Use this prompt to give you BATON steps for your idea:

Act as an expert business consultant.

Use the BATON framework to suggest structured next steps for my business idea.

BATON includes
Business – creating a product or service people want or need
Audience – attracting attention to your product or service via social media, advertising, events etc.
Tribe – establishing demand for your product or service with a smaller subset of the audience via newsletter, membership community, email marketing etc.
Offer – selling your product or service to your tribe
Network – scaling the business to increase revenue either by selling more to the same customers or selling to more customers.

I will provide you with the Business component.

Use this framework to build the next steps following the Business component I provide., suggesting ONE suggested action plan for Audience, Tribe, Offer and Network.

Business = [copy paste business idea, description]

I ran the prompt with

AI-Driven Sustainable Urban Farming Kits

  • Description: Develop a DIY urban farming kit, complete with sensors and an AI-driven app. This would allow city dwellers to grow their food sustainably. The sensors would monitor plant health, soil moisture, light levels, and more. The AI app would teach users how to care for their plants, troubleshoot issues, and optimise yields.

  • Potential Revenue Streams: Sales of the kits, subscription to premium app features, selling additional accessories and add-ons (like seeds, soil enhancements), and partnerships with organic suppliers.

  • Benefits: This encourages urban agriculture, reduces the carbon footprint associated with transporting food, and educates users on sustainable farming practices.

šŸ’¬ Prompt Output:

ChatGPT uses the framework to suggest alternatives for each stage of BATON.

Obviously you can do many strategies at each stage. For example for Audience you could use Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Pinterest or any other social media platform. You could also rely more on a blog and SEO (search engine optimisation) so that Google sends you traffic. Or you could use direct advertising and cold outreach.

There are a multitude of options - regardless of the option though they fit within the stage by stage framework of BATON, making the whole process more structured.

2. Personal BATON recommendations

Right now my personal recommendation would be:

  • X for Audience

  • Newsletter for Tribe

  • Digital product for Offer

There are 50+ options at each stage but these three give you the best chance of success.

Obviously this depends on your niche. If you were in B2B (business to business, ie. selling to businesses not individuals) then LinkedIn might replace X for audience.

But for 90% of businesses this core setup of X, newsletter and digital products will be optimal.

This is the setup I recommend to anyone setting up their first online business if they want the best chances of success.

3. Finding a community

Entrepreneurship is a lonely road - especially the first time you do it.

In a job you naturally have a set of colleagues around you. Whether you like them or not isn’t that important! At least there are people around to share successes and tougher times.

In entrepreneurship you are isolated and everything falls on you.

It’s important to have people to share both your successes and your burdens with. Or just have people with whom you can chat about starting and running your own business.

I’d recommend finding a community ASAP. It could be local - most cities have local business groups. Check Meetup.

Or, more likely, it’ll be online. This is especially the case if you are looking for a specific type of group - ie. people working with AI to start businesses.

X is a good place to start looking for these groups. People will have set up Discord or Whatsapp groups. Just get involved meeting people and you’ll eventually find the groups.

Alternatively you can always set one up yourself. This is a lot more work but can be very rewarding, especially if it’s aligned with your personality.

The group doesn’t need to be large. In fact having a smaller more tight knit group is better sometimes as you can talk more in-depth. I tend to find small masterminds of 5-7 work for focused discussions and mutual aid.

If you do struggle to find a group that works for you always remember that Prompt Entrepreneur has a community that you’d be very welcome in. We’re building businesses with AI together and are especially focused on first-time founders.

4. Premium Prompt - Accelerators

Free Trial - Premium

We’re providing a free trial of the Premium Prompts. Premium Prompts will be available for members only once our community launches. Stay tuned.

Still struggling to get your arse into gear?

Look for an business accelerator. These come in a variety of flavours and with just as many names.

It’ll be called something like a bootcamp, cohort, sprint, incubator, intensive, crash course, masterclass, fast track etc. etc.

The basic idea though is an expert runs a tightly time limited event where you work alongside other people with similar goals to launch your project.

Generally these will be a week to a month long and provide a structured set of steps for you to carry out. You’ll be doing so alongside other students so can talk about what’s working and what isn’t working.

The time limit is what’s most powerful about this method. It’s like having homework at school - you get it done because there’s a deadline!

Without the external deadline it’s tempting just to ā€œdo it laterā€. And it never gets done.

As a Prompt Entrepreneur Premium subscriber guess what - it’s your lucky day. You have free access to all the Accelerators I run. Keep your eyes peeled for the dates of upcoming Accelerators.

The next one is currently penciled in for early November.

Pulling it together

You’ve now gone through the pre-production process of starting a business.

We started with you. Your strengths and skills. Your dream life and what is needed to make that happen. It was a deep internal dive.

We used that personal inventory to start to generate business ideas that will work for you. We used AI to generate lots and lots of ideas so that we could start to filter and choose our favourites.

We then looked at how we confirm which business ideas are actually worth pursuing - without a market there’s no point expending time and effort. We’re instead stacking the dice in our favour by choosing a business idea that solves problems for an existing market.

We the put that to the test with an MVP. And you definitely didn’t skip that part right? Right?

Finally we looked at next steps and how to push through the last remnants of resistance using community and an accelerator. The best business idea without action is worthless - it’s only through sustained application of action that we build a business and can achieve the goals we set out.

A reminder of what we have covered this week :

Part 1: Exploring Your Interests and Skills

Part 2: Getting Clear on Your Motivations

Part 3: Finding Your Niche

Part 4: Validating and Refining Your Idea

Part 5: Planning Next Steps

See you tomorrow Prompt Entrepreneur!

Until then, keep PROMPTING!
