AI playbook
Find low-cost growth moves you can use before you have budget.
Start ReadingWe’ve reached the point where normally I'd say "Right, time to turn on adverts and test what works!"
But I'm instead going to assume you're in full bootstrap mode - no ad budget, no existing audience to leverage. Most growth advice assumes you've got one or the other, but what if you've got neither? That’s fine! We just need to get smart.
That's exactly where peer-to-peer growth comes in. Instead of building or buying audiences, you borrow them.
We are going to leverage other people’s audiences this week. I’m taking you through three proven methods that work without cash or followers.
Let's get started:
Three free growth methods
Foundations first
Growth research prompt
Good thing this is written not a video - I mix up my F’s and Th’s so three free would definitely trip me up! I blame growing up in South (Sarf) London rather than my lisp…
Over this week I’ll show you three different methods. The beautiful thing about all of them is that they aren’t about competition with companies who have massive marketing budgets. Instead we assume zero budget and get creative.
We work with the market. You're playing a completely different game - one based on relationships and genuine value exchange rather than who can outspend whom.
Here are the three methods we’ll cover:
Customer referrals are your warmest possible leads. These are people who've experienced your product, understand the value, and have personal networks who trust their recommendations.
The conversion rates here will be the highest you - often 3-5x higher than cold marketing because the trust transfer is immediate.
We’re going to set up a referral system as well as a system of “rewards” so that our current users and customers can help find new users and customers for us.
Getting featured and collaborations position you as someone worth interviewing, quoting, or featuring in other people's content. One podcast appearance or guest article can reach more people than months of organic posting.
You're borrowing established audiences who already trust the content creator. We’re just getting in front of their audience by making an exchange. We help them to get content (ie. an interview, video, article) and in exchange they put us in front of their audience.
Affiliate partnerships get influencers to actively promote your product to their audiences in exchange for commissions. We’ll start with “micro-influencers” with 1K-10K followers because they often have higher engagement than mega-influencers and are infinitely more accessible for newer businesses.
The magic really happens when these three methods work together. Content features build authority that makes affiliate partnerships more attractive. Affiliate partnerships create scale beyond your existing customer base. And those new customers can refer others. Etc. etc. All of them interact with each other.
Often there’s overlap too. For example you might go on someone’s podcast and then make them an affiliate. The more they push that episode to their audience and your tool the more money they make.
Most importantly, you don't need your own audience or advertising budget to start any of these. You're offering value - expertise, product benefits, commission opportunities - in exchange for access to audiences that already exist and trust other people.
This week follows a strategic build order because you want unified tracking across all three methods. We need this so that we know what’s working and what’s not. So we’re combining this week with “analytics” as a whole - tracking visits, sign ups, purchases, lifetime value and more.
By Friday, you'll have a complete growth ecosystem where you can compare the ROI of getting a customer referral versus appearing on a podcast versus landing an affiliate partner. This data then tells you where to focus your limited time for maximum growth. Which in turn will let us scale. We like that word: scale!
Here’s the basic rundown:
Day 37 (tomorrow): Build analytics foundation that tracks all three methods in one dashboard
Day 38: Add referral tracking module and launch customer referral program
Day 39: Add content feature tracking and start outreach for podcast/blog features
Day 40: Add affiliate commission module and begin micro-influencer partnerships
For each step I’ll show you how to vibe code in the feature yourself and provide third party integrations if you want to skip the technical stuff. Third party is fine but be aware there will be costs. I’ll provide the options so you can choose!
Before we kick off let’s get some research done. I’m giving you the skeleton but you need to fill it in (with…muscles?? flesh? Gross) with the specifics of your niche.
Use this prompt ideally with an AI agent so it can go into more depth. We’ll be referring to the report over the week. Feed in as much information about your business as possible - ask for summaries from your previous AI work for this.
Act as a bootstrap growth researcher helping me build a comprehensive peer-to-peer growth strategy. Create a detailed research report covering all three growth methods for my business:
BUSINESS CONTEXT: [Describe your business, target customers, price point, current customer count]
RESEARCH AREAS TO COVER:
**CUSTOMER REFERRAL RESEARCH:**
- Industry standard referral reward structures in [your industry]
- What referral gifts/incentives work best for [your price point]
- Successful referral program examples from similar businesses
- Timing strategies: when to ask customers for referrals
- Common referral program mistakes to avoid
- Tools and platforms other businesses use for referral tracking
**CONTENT FEATURE OPPORTUNITIES:**
- Podcasts that interview entrepreneurs in [your niche] (include audience size, contact info)
- Newsletters covering [your industry] that accept contributors
- Blogs publishing guest content related to [your topic]
- Industry round-ups and expert quote opportunities
- Conference speaking opportunities (virtual and in-person)
- Social media accounts that feature entrepreneur stories
**AFFILIATE PARTNERSHIP RESEARCH:**
- Standard commission rates in [your industry]
- Micro-influencers (1K-10K followers) whose audience matches [your target customer]
- Affiliate program structures used by successful companies in your space
- What resources/tools affiliates need to promote effectively
- Common affiliate onboarding and management practices
- Platforms and tools for affiliate tracking and payments
**COMPETITIVE INTELLIGENCE:**
- How do similar businesses in [your niche] approach growth without ads? Find specific examples for me to emulate.
- What partnership strategies are your competitors using?
- Which podcasts/blogs feature businesses like yours?
- What referral programs exist in adjacent industries you could model?
Create a comprehensive report with specific names, contact information, benchmark data, and actionable recommendations.Use agent mode or multiple prompt iterations to get comprehensive research! This is a big task so don’t expect it to be one-shot. Instead start broad, then ask follow-up questions to dig deeper into specific areas that look promising. You’re an AI pro by this point so you know this! This is just a gentle reminder that we don’t just switch our brains off.
Generate your comprehensive bootstrap growth research report using the prompt above. This becomes your reference document for the entire week
This research prevents you from guessing about referral rewards, commission rates, and outreach targets. You'll make informed decisions based on industry benchmarks and proven strategies. Keep hold of your report as we’ll be dipping into it over the rest of this week.
"Day 36 of AI Summer Camp: Instead of turning on ads, I'm building a bootstrap growth ecosystem.
Three methods that work without budget: customer referrals, getting featured, and affiliate partnerships. Just done some comprehensive research on industry benchmarks, potential partners, and successful program structures. Basically what the other people are doing.
Tomorrow: building the analytics foundation to track what actually works. No longer flying blind - going to get some proper data."
Tomorrow you build the analytics foundation that makes everything else possible. You'll create a tracking system that captures traffic sources, attribution, and conversions across all three growth methods.
We will not be building an all singing all dancing 360 degree analytics package. We don’t need it. But we do need to know - it's about knowing which methods drive real results so you can double down on what works and stop wasting time on what doesn't.
Keep Prompting,
Kyle
Once during a launch I was talking to a mentor and he asked the (seemingly!) most obvious question: so where do most of your sales come from?
Easy question right? Well…no. In our rush I hadn’t set up our systems properly. And the problem with data collection is you have to have them set up before people start arriving…
It’s kinda like handing out customer satisfaction surveys after someone has left the shop. They’re already gone. You’re not getting their info! It’s too late.
Same for me - I just didn’t have eyes-on what worked and where the sales came from. Embarrassing!
Before implementing any growth methods, you need a solid foundation to track what actually works. We’ll build out the foundation today and add to it over the week.
Let's get started:
Full funnel tracking system
Lead source attribution
Conversion rate measurement
Lifetime value calculation
Modular foundation for extensions
Most people build tracking as an afterthought. They launch referral programs, start affiliate partnerships, appear on podcasts, then try to figure out what's working. By then, it's too late to capture clean attribution data. Oopsie.
This week you're building the foundation first, then adding modules for each growth method. We’ll add tracking for referrals, content and affiliates over the next couple of days.
The goal isn't massively complex analytics. It’s easy to go down a rabbit hole here (and there are very advanced tools that you can purchase that allow you to do so). We just need to know what traffic sources are turning into sales - that’s sorta it for now!
Your analytics foundation needs to track the complete journey from first visit to long-term customer value. Here's what we're building:
Lead Source Attribution captures where every visitor comes from. Not just "social media" but specific referral codes, UTM parameters, and partner links. When someone lands on your site, you know exactly which growth method brought them.
Landing Conversion Tracking measures how many visitors become leads or free users. Different sources convert at different rates. A podcast appearance might drive 100 visitors with 2% conversion, while a customer referral might drive 5 visitors with 60% conversion. You need both volume and conversion data.
Free to Paid Conversion tracks which sources drive actual customers, not just leads. Some growth methods attract lookers, others attract buyers. A micro-influencer's audience might convert at 15% while a generic podcast appearance converts at 2%. This data completely changes your partnership strategy.
Lifetime Value Calculation shows the long-term revenue per customer by source. Some customers stick around and upgrade, others churn quickly. The affiliate who sends customers with £500 lifetime value is more valuable than the one who sends customers with £50 lifetime value, even if they send fewer people.
OK there’s a LOT here! But thankfully we can build this out using Lovable.
We're going to keep using Lovable + Supabase. Here's the foundation structure:
Traffic Sources Table captures all incoming traffic with complete attribution data. Every visitor gets a source record with UTM parameters, referral codes, and timestamp. This connects to everything else.
Users Table links back to traffic sources so you always know where each user originated. No matter when they convert - immediately or three months later - you maintain attribution.
Conversions Table tracks each step of your funnel with source attribution. Lead conversion, trial conversion, paid conversion, upgrades. Each event connects back to the original traffic source.
Revenue Table links all purchases back to traffic sources with lifetime value calculation. You can see total revenue by source, average order value, and customer lifetime value.
This foundation supports the modules you'll add later this week. Referral tracking plugs into traffic sources. Affiliate commissions calculate from revenue data. Content feature performance flows through the same attribution system.
Don’t worry - here’s everything from above pulled together for you in a prompt. So even if the above sounds like nonsense we can get the work done!
Help me build a comprehensive analytics foundation in Lovable using Supabase that tracks the complete customer journey from traffic source to lifetime value:
BUSINESS CONTEXT: [Describe your business model, pricing, typical customer journey]
FOUNDATION REQUIREMENTS:
**DATABASE STRUCTURE:**
- traffic_sources table: source, medium, campaign, content, referral_code, utm_data, landing_page, timestamp, session_id
- users table: user_id, source_id (links to traffic_sources), signup_date, conversion_path
- conversions table: user_id, source_id, conversion_type (lead/trial/paid/upgrade), amount, timestamp
- revenue table: user_id, source_id, transaction_amount, transaction_date, cumulative_ltv
**TRACKING FEATURES:**
- Automatic UTM parameter capture for all traffic sources
- Unique tracking codes for partners and campaigns
- Full attribution chain from first touch to final purchase
- Conversion rate calculation by source
- Lifetime value tracking per customer and source
- Dashboard showing performance across all metrics
**MODULAR STRUCTURE:**
- Foundation that supports referral tracking module (Day 38)
- Structure for affiliate commission calculation (Day 40)
- Integration points for content feature tracking (Day 39)
- Easy extension without rebuilding core system
**DASHBOARD VIEWS:**
- Traffic source performance: volume, conversion rates, revenue
- Customer acquisition cost by source
- Lifetime value comparison across sources
- ROI calculation for each growth method
- Funnel analysis showing drop-off points
Build this as a solid foundation I can build upon.
Build step by step, allow me to check and then we'll move to the next piece. Now this is a complex build so notice I’ve added an extra instruction as a final line. Basically: go slow and don’t make a mess! This will allow you to build piece by piece and make sure you’re on the right track.
Basically run through the prompt above. Use it to build your analytics foundation with complete funnel tracking from traffic source to lifetime value. The system should capture where leads come from, track conversion rates at each stage, and calculate customer lifetime value by source.
We’ll build on it starting tomorrow.
"Day 37 of AI Summer Camp: Built analytics foundation before adding growth methods.
Now I’ve got full funnel tracking that now captures:
Lead source attribution
Landing page conversion rates
Free to paid conversion by source
Lifetime value calculation
Modular structure for growth method extensions
Phew!
No more guessing what works. Now I’ll be able to see.
Tomorrow adding referral system.”
Tomorrow you add your first growth module - customer referral tracking. You'll extend today's foundation with referral-specific tables and launch your referral program with existing customers. The foundation will make this a lot easier because we’ve got the basic systems in play already.
Keep Prompting,
Kyle
Your biggest fans are already talking about your product.
Last week I talked about Lovable in my these guides and on social media in my lives. Not being they are paying me. But because it’s great.
And, when I remember to at least, I will give people my referral code and both the person I refer and myself get free credits. Cool stuff.
The referral program just makes it easier for me to help them and rewards me for something I was doing anyway.
That's the magic of referrals done right. You're not asking people to become salespeople - you're making it easier for your fans to help others and saying thank you when they do.
We’re going to build something similar into your product.
Let's get started:
Referrals vs. affiliates
What freebies can we good people
Adding the referral logic
Making sure people know about it!
Customer referrals are fundamentally different from the affiliate partnerships we'll cover on Friday. These are your fans - people who already love your product and naturally mention it in conversations. Some of them will be the champions we worked with during beta launch.
You're not asking them to become marketers; you're making it easier for them to help people they know and saying thank you when they do.
The key insight is avoiding cash rewards.
When you pay people money for referrals, it becomes transactional.
They start thinking like salespeople instead of helpful friends. But when you reward them with something related to your product - extra credits, premium features, exclusive access - it feels like a bonus gift for being awesome.
Take Lovable's referral system as a perfect example, as mentioned above.
Here's how it works:
Share your invite link with someone who needs to build an app
They sign up and get extra 10 credits to try the platform
You get 10 credits once they publish their first website
Brilliant system. Both parties get more of what they already value (platform credits), nobody feels like they're buying or selling, and Lovable rewards existing users for helping grow their community. Win, win, win.
And importantly it’s not about cash. As soon as cash enters the equation it becomes a different game. We’ll cover that Friday.
Also this approach converts at much higher rates because the trust transfer feels natural. When someone recommends a tool they genuinely use and love, it doesn't feel like marketing. They aren’t getting paid to tell you this so you can trust their advice more.
The key is offering something valuable that relates to your product, not cash. Credits, extra usage, premium features, or exclusive access work much better than money because they feel like gifts rather than payments.
There are lots of ways you can referrers so let’s get ideas flowing with a prompt:
Help me design a referral reward system for my product that feels like thanking fans rather than paying salespeople:
MY BUSINESS CONTEXT:
- Product: [Describe your product/service]
- Pricing: [Your current pricing structure from Week 7]
- Typical customer value: [Average revenue per customer]
- Usage patterns: [How customers typically use your product]
REFERRAL REWARD DESIGN:
**REWARD OPTIONS TO CONSIDER:**
- Service credits (extra usage, premium features for X period)
- Product enhancements (unlock features, increased limits)
- Exclusive access (beta features, priority support, community access)
- Physical rewards (branded items, exclusive merchandise)
- Experience rewards (1-on-1 sessions, exclusive content)
**REWARD CALCULATION:**
- What percentage of my customer value should rewards represent?
- How do I balance referrer rewards vs new customer incentives?
- What reward level motivates sharing without breaking my economics?
- Should rewards scale with number of successful referrals?
**REFEREE INCENTIVES:**
- What should new customers get for using a referral link?
- How do I make the referral valuable for the person being referred?
- Should referee rewards be different from referrer rewards?
**REWARD EXAMPLES FOR MY BUSINESS:**
Generate 3-5 specific reward structures that would work for my business model, including exact reward amounts and qualification criteria.
This will get you started but you’ll need to be smart to work out the best rewards. Also be careful of overcomplicating it. Easiest will be credits or usage. Maybe content. Maybe a 1:1 call with you?
Work with the AI back and forth rather than taking first option.
Once you’ve landed on some basic rewards let’s build the structure around what youve decided. We’re going to build the actual referral system. This extends yesterday's analytics foundation with referral-specific tracking while maintaining the modular approach.
Help me build a referral system in Lovable that extends yesterday's analytics foundation:
BUSINESS CONTEXT: [Your business and the reward structure you designed above]
EXTEND EXISTING SYSTEM:
- Add referral tables that integrate with existing users/traffic_sources/revenue tables
- Generate unique referral codes linked to customer accounts
- Track referral relationships through existing attribution system
- Calculate rewards automatically based on [your specific reward structure]
- Display referral performance in main dashboard alongside other traffic sources
REFERRAL SYSTEM FEATURES:
- Personal referral link generator for each customer
- Tracking when referral links are clicked and conversions happen
- Automatic reward delivery when qualification criteria are met
- Customer dashboard showing their referral activity and earned rewards
CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE:
- Easy way for customers to find and share their referral link
- Clear explanation of how rewards work and when they're delivered
- Simple sharing tools (email templates, social copy suggestions)
- Reward redemption or automatic delivery system
INTEGRATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Referral signups flow through existing traffic_sources tracking
- Referral conversions connect to existing sales attribution
- Referral LTV tracking integrates with existing revenue analysis
- ROI comparison with other growth methods in unified dashboard
Build this as an extension of yesterday's foundation, not a separate system. Make access from my admin panel easy.
Work through this step by step with me, checking functionality along the way. Again this is a chunky task so take your time and make sure each step works before pushing ahead.
You can also use third party tools like Rewardful. If doing so just talk to Lovable about how to integrate it and you’ll be able to move faster (but obviously at a price!)
OK we’ve got the basics in play.
The prompt above has also built your referral system into your product. For example adding references in the menus, user dashboard etc. so that they know it exists. That will get you a trickle over time.
These people will probably be your early champions again. So, yay, we get to go back to them and offer them something cool (for free). They can get more credits, or whatever reward you settled upon, simply by continuing to tell people about your product. Slick
Build and launch your referral tracking system integrated with yesterday's analytics foundation. And then reach out to your champions to tell them about the system and get them their links.
"Day 38 of AI Summer Camp: Added referral tracking to analytics foundation.
Extended yesterday's system with:
Referral code generation and tracking
Customer referral dashboard
Integration with main analytics
And, more importantly added some really cool rewards like xyz.”
Tomorrow you add content feature tracking to your foundation and start systematic outreach to get featured in podcasts, newsletters, and blogs.
Keep Prompting,
Kyle
Today we’re continuing to borrow other people’s audiences.
The focus now is getting shout outs from creators, influencers and people with sizeable audiences.
The last part was about referrals. Actual users. Tomorrow is about affiliates. People who want to make from sending you traffic.
Today is about people who create content and need to keep bringing interesting stuff to their audiences!
Most people get this horribly wrong.
I get a few DMs a day like this:
"Hi Kyle! I'm John from TechStartup123. We've built an amazing AI tool that revolutionises productivity! Would love to get featured on your content. Our tool does xyz…”.
Nah. It’s not enough. These messages get ignored.
Here's what actually works: providing value first. Content creators need good content constantly. Podcasters need interesting guests. Newsletter writers need fresh insights. Bloggers need compelling stories.
If you can provide us with that you have an in.
Today we're tapping into other people's audiences by helping them create better content, not by just asking them to promote us.
Let's get started:
What do content creators want
Research the easy way
Build trackable content links
Content creators are constantly under pressure to produce fresh, valuable material for their audiences. It’s their lifeblood. They need fresh material.
You have two ways in - i) offer them money. Money works. Never fails.
OR give them something they can write or talk about.
Don’t pitch them on the product. Tell them about the story.
When you understand what each type of creator needs, you can position yourself as the solution to their content problems rather than another person asking for promotion. But at the same time? You get a platform.
What type of content do they need? Depends on their platform.
Podcast Hosts need guests who can deliver genuine value through compelling stories and actionable advice. They want people who can speak authoritatively about specific topics, share real results and failures, and engage in natural conversation. You can go on and talk about your niche, its problems and (as an aside) what you’ve built to help.
Newsletter Writers need expert insights, case studies, and trend analysis that helps their subscribers stay ahead. Can you write something up for them that fits their normal style that their audience will want? They’ll feature it.
Short form video creators need visual demos of cool tech, new tools that they can show their audiences that’ll save them time and money.
And so on and so forth.
The key insight: they all need content, and you need distribution. You need to work out the value exchange here.
The complexity here comes from the fact that the content creators will all want different forms of value.
Instead of us just taking the same thing to them all (say, a case study) we need to tailor our approach. Thankfully we can lean on AI, especially a research or agent model that can go and dig around for us.
Act as a content opportunity research agent helping me identify creators who need the value I can provide:
MY EXPERTISE AND STORY - quiz me on these first:
- Business: [Your product/service and stage]
- Unique insights: [What you've learned that others haven't]
- Interesting metrics/results: [Specific numbers and outcomes]
- Contrarian opinions: [Where you disagree with conventional wisdom]
- Failure stories: [Mistakes you made and lessons learned]
- Process innovations: [New ways you do things]
RESEARCH AREAS:
**PODCAST OPPORTUNITIES:**
Find 15+ podcasts that interview entrepreneurs in [your specific niche/industry]:
- Show name, host name, typical audience size
- Recent episode topics and guest profiles
- Contact information (email, social, website)
- What value I could provide their audience based on episode themes
- Specific angle or story that would interest this particular show
**NEWSLETTER FEATURES:**
Find 10+ industry newsletters that feature expert insights:
- Newsletter name, editor/writer name, subscriber count estimate
- Content themes and typical contribution formats
- How they feature experts (interviews, quotes, guest articles)
- What unique perspective I could contribute
- Recent topics I could add valuable commentary to
**BLOG GUEST POST OPPORTUNITIES:**
Find 10+ blogs that publish guest content in my space:
- Site name, editor contact, traffic estimate
- Content style and typical article formats
- Guest post guidelines and submission process
- 3-5 specific article ideas I could pitch them
- How my articles would benefit their audience
**SOCIAL MEDIA COLLABORATIONS:**
Find 10+ LinkedIn/Twitter/IG/Tiktok/Youtube creators who feature entrepreneurs:
- Creator name, follower count, engagement rates
- Content themes and typical collaboration formats
- What story or insight I could share with their audience
- How I could add value to their existing content themes
For each opportunity, include:
- SPECIFIC pitch angle based on their content needs
- Why my story/expertise fits their audience
- What format would work best (interview, article, quote, etc.)
- Contact approach and timing considerations
Create a prioritised list based on audience quality and likelihood of response. This research gives you a targeted list of creators who actually need what you can provide, rather than random outreach to anyone with an audience.
Importantly we need to focus in on people whose audience are interested in.
If we have a tool to help accountants specifically and we go hit up a general productivity podcast we’re off the mark. Instead we hit up accounting podcasts. It has to be aligned. You provide value by pitching something that’s useful; to the content creators’ audiences.
Before we push out our requests we need (you guessed it) tracking! We need to know whose audiences make it to our product.
Once you've identified content opportunities, you need trackable links that send people back to your site while measuring which creators drive the most valuable traffic. This isn't complex thankfully. We’ve done the hard work. It’s systematic UTM usage integrated with your existing analytics.
Help me build a simple link generator for content creator tracking:
BACKEND LINK GENERATOR:
Create a simple form in my existing backend system that generates clean trackable links:
INPUT FIELDS:
- Creator/source name: ie [growth-newsletter] or [entrepreneur-podcast]
- Content type: podcast, newsletter, blog, interview
- Optional: specific episode/article name
AUTO-GENERATE CLEAN LINK:
- Simple format: yoursite.com/?ref=[source-name]
- Example: yoursite.com/?ref=growth-newsletter
- Example: yoursite.com/?ref=entrepreneur-podcast
BACKEND TRACKING:
When someone visits the link, automatically:
- Capture the "ref" parameter value
- Log it in existing traffic_sources table
- Track all signups/purchases back to that creator
- Show performance in main analytics dashboard
CREATOR EXPERIENCE:
- Give creators a clean, professional link to share
- Easy to remember: yoursite.com/?ref=their-name
- No ugly UTM parameters or complex tracking codes
- Looks trustworthy in show notes, articles, emails
INTEGRATION:
- Works with existing analytics foundation
- Creator performance shows alongside referrals and other sources
- Compare ROI across all growth methods in unified dashboard
Keep it simple - just generates clean links that track properly in the backend. This is similar to the referral (and indeed the affiliate system) but we’ll create links for the creator to save them time. You could also just give creators a referral and/or affiliate link too. There are lots of ways to chop and change this - we’re exploring them all this week and you can choose the best approach.
Use the research agent prompt to identify 25+ content creators who need the value you can provide. Focus on podcasts, newsletters, blogs, and social creators in your space who regularly feature entrepreneurs or experts. Focus down on whose audiences would be genuinely interested in what you’ve built - thankfully these people are also our customers.
Build your trackable content link system with proper UTM codes integrated with your existing analytics foundation. Create the links and landing experience you'll share with creators to drive traffic back to your site.
Then reach out to 10+ high-priority creators leading with specific value you can provide their audience. Not a general “plz help” but a concrete exchange of value - giving them something actually useful.
"Day 39 of AI Summer Camp: Started outreach to content creators today.
Researched who I should be talking to and, importantly, what I can offer in return.
And of course more tracking! Built a system to track my media appearances and see what drives traffic. “
Tomorrow you complete your bootstrap growth ecosystem by adding an affiliate system. We’re covering this last because it involves cash - and therefore is a step up in complexity!
Keep Prompting,
Kyle
But we’re going to be smart. As always. We’re going to bootstrap.
Specifically we’ll use affiliate marketing. With this you only pay when you make money. Unlike Facebook ads where you pay upfront and hope (fingers crossed) for returns, affiliates only get paid when they drive actual sales. You never go negative. The money's already in your bank account before you pay out commissions.
What is this wizardry? We only pay from realised revenue. The customer pays you £100, you pay your affiliate £30, you keep £70. Solid.
Let's get started:
Affiliate vs referral
Micro-influencer targeting
What to pay affiliates
Technical implementation
Partner resource creation
First let’s clarify. As people get this mixed up.
Earlier in the week we covered referral marketing. Now we’re covering affiliate. These are not the same thing!
Affiliate marketing is paying other people to promote your product, but only when they successfully drive sales. Think Amazon Associates - millions of people have Amazon affiliate links, and Amazon only pays when someone actually buys something through those links.
Here's how it works: You give someone a special tracking link. They share it with their audience. When someone clicks that link and makes a purchase, the affiliate gets a commission. No sale, no payment. It's performance-based marketing.
Affiliate vs Referral Confusion: People often mix these up, but they're different animals. Referrals are your existing customers sharing because they love your product - you reward them as a thank you. Affiliates are typically strangers who see a business opportunity - they actively promote you to earn commissions. They don’t necessarily care about (or even use!) your product. They are in the business of affiliating.
Referrals are grateful fans. Affiliates are business partners.
Confusion arises because sometimes these programmes get conflated. Or sometimes you may have people who are referrers who become affiliates. Or vice-versa.
So, we know that affiliates are people who want to make money by promoting your product to their audiences. Cool. So obviously we go straight to the people with the largest audiences right?
Seems sensible- but it rarely works. This is because people with audiences in the 10s, 100s of thousands or millions get paid directly. A brand will come to them and cut a deal for cash.
At that scale the content creators have that leverage. Each deal is worth $1000s or 10s of $1000s. They get the cheque, shoot a 30 second video and hit publish. Easy money.
So when a small new tool comes to them and say “hey I’ll give you 30% of my $10/subscription” if you promote it understand that this isn’t very attractive to larger creators. It’s nothing personal - it’s just the maths doesn’t stack up!
To make the same $10,000 they’ll have to send over 3333 paying subs…a big challenge and a commitment. Much easier to make that 30 second vid and collect a quick cheque.
So instead we’ll target micro-influencers with 1K-10K followers, not mega-influencers with hundreds of thousands plus. Here's why this strategy works:
Accessibility - They actually respond to messages. Mega-influencers have agents and minimum spends. A productivity coach with 3K followers will respond to a thoughtful partnership proposal.
Higher Engagement - Smaller accounts get 5-10% engagement while mega-influencers get 1-2%. Higher engagement means more people see and act on recommendations.
Trust Factor - To their audience they feel like trusted friends, not celebrities. When your mate with 2K followers recommends a tool, you listen.
Audience Alignment - Incredibly niche, targeted audiences. A consultant helping coaches has exactly who might need your coaching tool. Mega influencers rarely have a tight focused audience, just because often the audiences don’t exist at that scale!
Long-term Relationships - More likely to become genuine ongoing partners, especially if your affiliate deal pays out well for them. Heck, for some of them it might be the first $ they get from their content!
So…how much to give away?
I might seem made here. But consider giving away up to 100% commission early days. You get a $30/month subscription, you give the affiliate $30 a month.
Are you mad?? Why give it all away? Growth! The more you incentivise them, the more they'll push. The more users you get, the more momentum. The more word of mouth, the more referrals. You just cover more ground.
Growth, exposure and momentum basically open doors. Doors that are hard to predict early on. And we can engineer all that momentum by being overly generous with early affiliates.
Think of this as marketing cost straight through to affiliates. Instead of chucking cash at Facebook for adverts you are paying it through to affiliates and, even better, you pay it from revenues coming in! So it’s derisked marketing spend.
This is a very aggressive route but worth considering.
Otherwise, if you want to be boring (fine, sensible..) 30-50% is relatively normal - lets you make money and reinvest into growth.
Also obviously your product is physical or has a cost to deliver then bake that into the commissions and decrease the %. You should not lose money on an affiliate sale. You want to be fully aligned - their success is your success.
OK let’s get this built out. A couple of stages today. As always work these prompts step by step.
Keep this simple and manual for now. Basically affiliate links which trigger and ascribe sales, then you do payouts manually. You can set up Stripe connections and auto payouts later - that's more advanced stuff. We don’t want to (or need to!) touch that yet.
Here’s a prompt to get started with the basic affiliate system:
Help me build a simple manual affiliate tracking system. Built upon my existing tracking and analytics systems.
AFFILIATE LINK GENERATION:
- Create unique tracking links for each affiliate: yoursite.com/?aff=partner-name
- When someone visits these links, capture the 'aff' parameter
- Store affiliate attribution in existing traffic_sources table
- Track all signups and purchases back to the affiliate who referred them
SALES TRACKING:
- When a purchase happens, check if there's affiliate attribution
- Calculate commission based on sale amount and agreed percentage. Ask me for the % breakdowns.
- Log commission owed in affiliate_commissions table
- Flag for manual payout processing
BASIC TRACKING TABLES:
- affiliates: partner info, commission rate, contact details, status
- affiliate_commissions: sale_id, affiliate_id, commission_amount, payout_status
- Integration with existing analytics
Keep it simple - manual payouts, basic tracking, no automation complexity. This will help you get the basics in play. It’s really an extension of our previous tracking system but for affiliate links. We are going to add a few more elements though.
Unlike our previous systems we need a way for our affiliates to see what’s going on. This is because money is in play so we need transparency. We want to build an Affiliate Dashboard. Basically a place where they can login and see their link’s usage.
Create an affiliate dashboard with transparency and partner resources:
AFFILIATE DASHBOARD ACCESS:
- Simple login for each affiliate partner, create affiliate user role
- Personal dashboard showing their performance stats
- Real-time data on clicks, signups, sales, commissions
PERFORMANCE TRANSPARENCY:
- Clicks on their affiliate links (daily, weekly, monthly)
- Signups generated through their links
- Sales and commission earned
- Conversion rates for their traffic
PARTNER RESOURCES SECTION:
Add a dashboard section for resources that I will upload such as
- Download high-quality product graphics and screenshots
- Copy-paste social media templates and email templates
- Product information sheets and talking points
- Success stories and testimonials they can reference
- Video assets or promotional materials
- Brand guidelines and usage requirements
Create an uploader interface for Admin accounts to add this material for affiliate accounts to access and download.Again, work step by step, testing and iteratively improving.
Notice I’ve also had the instructions add a Resources section. This is where you can add marketing materials for your affiliates. We want to make their job of marketing you as simple as possible. So we do the work for them!
We now need some partner resources!
Thankfully we can also use AI to hep us put together the resources for our affiliates. Use this below work you’ve done on the offer, for example working on the sales page. Or bring that information over into the chat as required.
Help me create a complete affiliate marketing resource package:

- Clear value proposition in simple language affiliates can use
- Key benefits and specific outcomes customers achieve
- Exact problems the product solves with real examples

COMPELLING COPY LIBRARY:

Bootstrap growth ecosystem complete - and no ads needed!"
You've built something beautiful this week - three growth methods that work in perfect harmony, each strengthening the others:
Customer Referrals are your foundation. These are fans who love your product and naturally mention it. You've made it easier for them to share and rewarded them when they do. They provide the social proof and initial traction.
Content Features build your authority and reach new audiences. Every podcast, newsletter, or blog feature positions you as an expert worth listening to. This credibility makes affiliate partnerships more attractive and gives referrers social proof to share. And the people you work with will link back to your work, opening up another traffic channel.
Affiliate Partnerships create your distributed sales team. Micro-influencers actively promote your product to audiences that trust their recommendations. This scales your reach beyond your existing customers and one-time content features.
The real win here is how these three no-money required marketing methods will feed into one another. A customer referral might discover you through an affiliate link. Someone who heard you on a podcast might become your strongest affiliate. An affiliate's promotion might lead to a content feature opportunity. It’s all in play now.
And beautifully you can see what’s working!
Week 9 focuses on direct sales mastery - converting all this partnership-generated interest into revenue. You'll learn pricing strategies, objection handling, and closing techniques that turn conversations into customers.
Keep Prompting,
Kyle
