Google DeepMind announced their Gemini 2.5 Deep Think model got 10 out of 12 problems correct at the ICPC programming competition, earning gold medal performance. Ten minutes later, OpenAI one-upped them by announcing their reasoning model solved all 12 problems for first place. This explains why AI can win math competitions but still struggles with counting Rs in "strawberry" - high-level math is about logical reasoning, not arithmetic.
